Realignment at Perlen Papier AG
Perlen Papier AG, a company of Perlen Industrieholding AG, is adjusting its production costs due to the persistently challenging market situation. This is intended to secure the future viability of the production site in Perlen and optimize the cost base in the long term. Perlen Papier will continue to produce with both paper machines and move into the future.
Perlen, 11 August 2025 – Persistently weak demand for paper and further consolidation in the European paper market are creating a challenging market environment. In order to ensure its effectiveness, efficiency, and thus its future viability, Perlen Papier AG has decided, after careful consideration and evaluation, to reduce costs starting in fall 2025. By continuing to operate its two paper machines, Perlen Papier AG will continue to supply its customers with coated magazine paper and newsprint in the usual quality.
Due to the tough market situation, Perlen Papier AG has already made some big cuts, but the savings measures put in place did not show enough of an impact. So, along with other steps to boost efficiency and cut costs, job cuts are unavoidable. The plan is to reduce the workforce by around 65 positions. Employees have been informed of the intended measures. The statutory consultation process has been initiated. A social plan will be implemented for the employees affected.
"In this challenging situation, we are reducing our costs while continuing to operate both paper machines. This will enable us to maintain a sound economic basis for Perlen Papier AG, supported by a strong balance sheet and our long-term anchor shareholders. We deeply regret the painful steps that this entails. Unfortunately, however, they are essential to ensure paper production. We will support the employees affected and do our utmost to find socially acceptable solutions," says Dr. Florian Geiger, CEO of Perlen Industrieholding AG and of Perlen Papier AG.
Paper has been produced in Perlen for over 150 years. Thanks to steam from the neighboring waste incineration plant and its own hydroelectric power stations, production is virtually CO2-neutral, with CO2 emissions amounting to around a quarter of the industry average. Perlen Papier AG now operates one of the most modern paper mills in Europe and is Switzerland's largest recycler of waste paper. With its products, the paper mill makes an important contribution to the circular economy.
