(in inglese) Battery storage facility expands Perlen Industrieholding AG’s industrial site into an energy hub
BESS Perlen AG, a joint venture between Perlen Industrieholding AG and the Valyou Investment Foundation, is advancing the development of the industrial site in Perlen into a modern energy hub. Together with its partners, the company is investing in a battery storage system. The facility is scheduled to become operational by the end of the year, enhancing grid stability in the region and unlocking new value creation opportunities.
Perlen, 17 August 2026 – BESS Perlen AG is investing in a battery storage system supplied by southern German company ADS-TEC Energy. With a power output of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 20 MWh, the facility will be installed at the site of Perlen Papier AG, a subsidiary of Perlen Industrieholding AG, in Perlen. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2026. Overall project management is being handled by the Swiss wattss Group.
Battery storage facility as a strategic expansion of the industrial site
The extensive industrial site in Perlen is being strategically expanded with the addition of an energy management component. The battery storage facility will be integrated into the existing infrastructure and is expected to generate additional revenues by marketing flexibility on the energy markets. In the initial phase, the focus will be on participating in the balancing energy markets. In the long term, further opportunities in day-ahead and intraday trading are planned.
The investment forms part of the long-term strategy to position industrial sites not only as production sites but also as active participants in the energy system. Battery storage facilities play a key role in this by providing flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable energy.
“With the battery storage system, we are systematically developing our industrial site into a modern energy hub and unlocking new value creation opportunities. Energy thus becomes an additional economic pillar of our site,” says Dr. Florian Geiger, CEO of Perlen Industrieholding AG and Perlen Papier AG.
Combining industrial site development with modern energy markets
BESS Perlen AG was established in late 2025 by Perlen Industrieholding AG and the Valyou Investment Foundation to invest in energy storage infrastructure for the long term and ensure its operation. The project combines industrial site development with the opportunities and requirements of modern energy markets. “This project demonstrates how institutional capital, attractive industrial sites, and innovative energy technologies can work together to create sustainable and attractive infrastructure assets,” says Yonten Wagma, Managing Director of the Valyou Investment Foundation.
ADS-TEC Energy is supplying the battery storage system, drawing on more than 15 years of experience in the development of battery storage solutions, power electronics and energy management systems. “Battery storage systems create economic flexibility. They enable companies to store electricity strategically, market it intelligently and, at the same time, make an important contribution to a stable energy system. With our many years of experience, we know what matters when operating such systems in an industrial environment,” says Michael Rudloff, COO of ADS-TEC Energy.
The wattss Group is responsible for overall project management and is overseeing the project from development and technical integration through to the commercialization of the storage system in the energy markets. “Large-scale storage projects like the one in Perlen demonstrate the potential of bringing industry and energy markets together. It is crucial to consider technology, the industrial site, financing, and commercialization as an integrated whole from the outset,” says Marco Rüegg, CEO of the wattss Group.
Transformation of Perlen Industrieholding AG continues to advance
The implementation of the battery storage facility marks the first step in Perlen Industrieholding AG’s site development. Together with new paper products and the company’s entry into fibre-based moulding packaging solutions as a complementary business area, the project represents another consistent step in the company’s strategic transformation from a traditional paper producer to a diversified industrial company.
